Understanding Female Hair Loss

There are many reasons women experience hair loss,  from hormonal changes and menopause to stress, nutrition, thyroid issues, or even certain medications. Often, it’s a combination of factors, which is why every case is unique.

Hair loss can affect much more than your hair. It can impact confidence, identity, and how you feel about yourself.

I have a particular interest in perimenopausal and menopausal hair loss, where hormonal shifts can noticeably change hair growth and density. By understanding these patterns, I can create treatment plans that are tailored, effective, and supportive, helping you feel more like yourself again.

Understanding Treatments

  • Utilises the patients own platelets which release growth factors into the scalp. These can help support follicle regeneration, scalp blood supply and extend the growth phase of the hair follicle.

  • Polynucleotides are naturally derived DNA fragments that work to repair and revitalise the skin and scalp at a cellular level. When injected into the scalp, they help to improve hydration, elasticity and tissue regeneration by supporting fibroblast activity and reducing inflammation creating a healthier environment for the hair and scalp.

  • Minoxidil promotes hair growth by widening tiny blood vessels in the scalp and stimulating the hair follicle’s active cells. This increases oxygen and nutrient delivery, upregulates growth factors such as VEGF, and helps prolong the hair’s growth (anagen) phase. Over time, follicles produce thicker, stronger hairs and can show improved density in areas affected by thinning. It can be taken as a tablet or applied as a topical foam.

  • Finasteride for Women

    Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can weaken hair follicles over time. It is suitable only for postmenopausal women, as it should not be used during pregnancy or when there is a chance of becoming pregnant. Under medical supervision, finasteride can help to slow shedding and support thicker, stronger hair growth.

  • When Oestrogen and Progesterone levels drop in midlife, hair loss can accelerate because DHT can become more dominant. DHT is the androgen which causes thinning of the hair on the top and crown of the head typically after menopause. HRT is not licensed primarily for hair loss but can help support the bigger picture.

  • This is not an exhaustive list, there are other options to be considered, such as other anti androgen therapies and triamcinolone injections for localised alopecia area. Please ask when booking if there is a particular treatment you are interested in.

FAQ

  • Blood tests may include checks for thyroid function, iron and ferritin levels, vitamin D, B12, and hormonal profiles. These help identify any deficiencies or imbalances that could contribute to hair loss.

  • Stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to shedding known as telogen effluvium. The good news is this type of loss is often temporary and reversible once the underlying stress or trigger is managed.

  • For some women, HRT can help stabilise hormone fluctuations that contribute to hair loss. However, it’s not suitable or effective for everyone. A full medical review helps determine whether HRT, or alternative therapies, are the right option for you.

  • Mild shedding is normal, we all lose hair daily. However, noticeable thinning, widening partings, or increased shedding may indicate an underlying issue that can often be treated once properly diagnosed.
